This treat was most likely developed by campers in the early 20th century who found uses for the fairly new mass-produced marshmallow.
The first printed record of the S’mores recipe is found the 1927 Girl Scout handbook, Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts”.
This treat has been a favorite of campers ever since!
