Tackle the Waters of Marion County
Take home a trophy or brag about the one that got away, Marion County offers some of the finest fishing sites in the state. From one end of the county to the other, you can tackle our lakes, rivers and streams to find largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill, northern pike and trout. Curtisville Lake and Campground offers 695 acres of lush scenery. Around the 30-acre lake there are hiking trails and picnicking. Other amenities include a playground, shelter, trailhead, footbridge and two bathrooms. A new ADA accessible fishing pier has recently been added to the lake. The lake is periodically stocked by the Department of Natural Resources and the fishing is good. Activities include: non-motorized boating, hiking, biking, fishing, and leisure activities. In addition, there are two campgrounds located at the lake. One side offers primitive camping opportunities, while the other side of the lake offers spacious RV sites with electric hookups. All campsites are equipped with a fire ring and picnic table. Sites are first come first serve. Along the Monongahela River, Pricketts Fort www.pricketsfort.org features a concrete ramp, courtesy docks, restrooms, lighting and potable water. Additional fishing along the Mon River includes a short distance north of State Route 310 Bridge. Other key sites in Marion County include, the West Fork River at Everson Bridge and Worthington Park; Flat Run Lake, Huey Run Lake and Big Run Lake all in the Mannington area; the Paw Paw Creek from Rivesville to Basnettville; and the Whiteday Creek near Smithtown. Marion County Park and Recreation Commission (MCPARC) has recently acquired the Guyses Run Fishing Park near Colfax. The old Eastern, Peabody Coal property has excellent fishing opportunities and unlimited recreational potential. Test your skills on the Tygart Valley River at Valley Falls State Park. In addition to fishing, the park hosts a variety of outdoor recreation activities including picnicking, kayaking, and 18 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Valley Falls State Park is open to the public and there is no entry fee to enjoy the park. The park closes at dark and gates re-open at 7:00 a.m. Visit www.mcparc.com, www.wvdnr.gov or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Marion County Youth Fishing Park, located about a half mile past the BMX Park on Holt Road, is a great fishing opportunity for all the children in your life. The pond is situated so that it is easy access for those little ones. Open from March 1 through October 31, the pond is stocked with bass, bluegill, sunfish, catfish and hybrid bluegill – all to keep these little fishermen coming back for more.
